On January 22, 2009, David Cunningham, a partner in our Los Angeles office, was appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. David will be sworn in on April 15, 2009.

David began his legal career almost 30 years ago in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Honor Program, and then moved to a federal judicial clerkship with the Honorable Terry J. Hatter, Jr. In 1984, he entered private practice. He joined Meyers Nave in 2007. David's work with cities and redevelopment agencies has helped improve the economic base of several communities, especially in blighted and contaminated areas in Los Angeles County. His efforts have helped turn underutilized properties into more commercially productive enterprises, and have helped create jobs.

In 2001, David was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Commission by Mayor James Hahn. He was elected President of the Commission in 2003. While on the Board, he dealt with high-profile cases involving shootings and excessive use of force allegations, and he successfully worked to institute changes in Los Angeles Police Department policy on these issues. Cunningham is also an appointed member of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Equity Oversight Panel. This panel makes findings and recommends discipline following investigations of harassment and discrimination within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

David also has an extensive history of volunteering in the Los Angeles community. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Los Angeles Urban League, the Los Angeles Business Council, the Watts Health Foundation Community Trust, and the Los Angeles Bar Association. He now sits on the Board of Directors of the Midnight Mission. Through his leadership, the Midnight Mission has expanded its facilities to include room for homeless families and chemically dependent individuals.
