Brown Act Training for School Attorneys

Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina

Please join Meyers Nave Senior Associate Kate Cook for a presentation on the Brown Act at the California Council of School Attorneys Annual Workshop. The workshop is open to CCSA members and non-member school law attorneys. The two-day conference is approved for 12 hours of MCLE credit.

The Ralph M. Brown Act, California’s open meetings law, provides legal requirements to help ensure the right of access to information and transparency in local government decision making. The Brown Act’s intricate guidelines provide important, yet often confusing rules and requirements. Kate will provide advice, strategies and real-life examples to help school law attorneys who represent school districts, county offices of education, and community colleges in California.

This workshop will guide attendees through the ins and outs of the Brown Act, including:

  • What constitutes a meeting, including committees, advisory boards, and serial meetings
  • Information on different types and manner of conducting meetings, including special meetings, emergency meetings and closed sessions
  • Agenda requirements, notice requirements, and public participation at meetings
  • Potential penalties for violating the Brown Act
