The Southern California Public Labor Relations Council will host a presentation and a free luncheon followed by a round table discussion. Gina Roccanova will discuss the new paid sick leave law (AB 1522), which takes effect July 1, 2015.
During last years’ legislative session, Governor Brown signed AB 1522, known as the “Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014.” This law requires California employers to provide paid sick leave to employees beginning July 1, 2015. While most public employers do provide paid sick leave to salaried full-time employees, many do not provide it for part-time, hourly and seasonal workers. Employers will need to begin providing at least three days of paid sick leave per year at the employee’s regularly hourly wage to eligible employees. Employers will accordingly have to modify leave policies and payroll systems to ensure that leave is properly tracked for newly eligible employees. There are many other nuances to this new law that have been clarified and analyzed since its signing last year. The program will help attendees more fully understand the provisions of the law and begin preparing for July 1st.
