Meyers Nave Principal Appointed by Governor to Los Angeles County Superior Court

Los Angeles, CA – Meyers Nave is pleased to congratulate principal David S. Cunningham III on his appointment by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

David fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Xenophon F. Lang.

David is a principal and a leading eminent domain attorney at Meyers Nave. Upon joining Meyers Nave, David attracted many clients to the firm with his experience in redevelopment law and condemnation matters. His practice focused on diverse areas of the law, including real estate and goodwill valuation, relocation eligibility and assistance, inverse condemnation claims, federal preemption and constitutional challenges in state and federal courts. David has litigated precedent-setting cases such as Worldwide Enterprises, Inc. vs. the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency, a condemnation matter that established clarifying provisions to the eminent domain law affecting expert testimony on valuation issues.

A native of Los Angeles, David earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the New York University School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern California. After completing his studies, David began his legal career as an attorney in the Honors Program with the United States Department of Justice. In 1983, David moved on to clerk for the Honorable Terry J. Hatter Jr., U.S. District Judge for the Central District of California in Los Angeles. The following year, David joined Finley, Kumble, Heine, Underberg, Manley & Casey in Beverly Hills, representing public entities and publicly traded companies in real estate acquisitions. He was an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School from 1987 to 1991 and served on the Los Angeles Unified School District Governance Commission from 2005 to 2006.

“Meyers Nave is an extraordinary firm filled with fine lawyers who lead the state in the area of public law. I will long treasure my time with the firm, even as I look forward to the opportunity to serve the people of the State of California with energy and enthusiasm,” says David.

David is an active member of the Los Angeles community. He has served on the Los Angeles Urban League Board of Directors and the Los Angeles Business Council and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Midnight Mission. David also served on the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners from 2000 to 2005, including two years as president of the Board.

“The entire Meyers Nave family is extremely proud of David. We are honored to have worked by his side and look forward to this exciting new chapter in his career,” says Meyers Nave founder Steven Meyers. Managing Principal Jayne Williams echoes Meyers’ sentiments, adding “David’s legal expertise, integrity and commitment to public service and to the Los Angeles community will make him an outstanding jurist. The Governor could not have made a better appointment to the Los Angeles Superior Court.”
